9 March 2007 - Major industrial and commercial firms in Shanghai will be required to report their monthly power usage this year, according to a report by the official Xinhua news agency.
Shanghai's economic planners said they have set a target of cutting energy consumption for every 10,000 yuan ($1293) of industrial added value by 6.2 per cent and every 10,000 yuan of commercial added value by three per cent this year, Xinhua said.
The city has an overall energy reduction goal of four per cent, Xinhua said. The number of enterprises subject to the new mandatory monthly reporting number 800 across the city and are mainly in the steel, power and petrochemical sectors, as well as large shopping malls and hotels, Xinhua said.
They account for about 70 per cent of the city's total energy consumption. It added that Baosteel Group, the country's largest steelmaker and energy consumer, is making efforts to cut down on consumption, as it accounted for 19 per cent of the city's total energy output in 2005.
