27 February 2007 - More wind turbines were installed in the US than any other country in 2006, bringing its total wind generating capacity to 11,600 MW, according to the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA).
After natural gas, wind accounted for more new capacity than any other source. Texas overtook California last year as the state producing most power from wind, and the state wants to nearly double this amount by 2015, and nearly double again by 2025.
Despite the high growth rates, however, wind accounts for less than 1 per cent of the US's overall electricity generation. The key drivers behind the growth of wind power have been lowered generating costs, the opening up of more electricity transmission networks to wind generation, and federal tax credits for wind generation, according to the AWEA.
