Siemens selected for Long Island NGCC plant

21 February 2007 -- Siemens Power Generation (PG) has been awarded a contract to supply equipment, operation and maintenance for the Caithness Long Island Energy Center. Caithness will be a natural gas combined cycle power plant on Long Island and supply 350-MW capacity to the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA). The total order volume, including operations and maintenance services, is approximately $450 million.

The Caithness facility will be located in an existing industrial park in the town of Brookhaven, New York. It will be the first major power generating facility to be built on Long Island in over 30 years. The plant will help meet the power demands of one of the fastest growing suburbs of New York City.

Construction on Caithness is scheduled to commence in early 2007, and is expected to be completed and begin generating electricity for LIPA's customers by the summer of 2009. The scope of supply for Siemens PG comprises an SGT6-5000F gas turbine and an SST-900 RH steam turbine. The primary fuel will be natural gas. The gas turbine will be manufactured in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, and the steam turbine in Norrkoping, Sweden. Siemens will also handle operations and maintenance services for the plant for a period of 17 years.
