16 February 2007 -- Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) announced plans to add new environmental equipment at John Sevier Fossil Plant that will reduce certain emissions by as much as 95 percent.

TVA will retrofit the 712-MW coal-fired plant with a selective non-catalytic reduction (SNCR) system to reduce nitrogen oxide and scrubbers to reduce sulfur dioxide on the four units at John Sevier. The plant burns low-sulfur coal to reduce its sulfur dioxide emissions.

TVA did not announce who the contractors for the retrofit will be. The cost of the additional emissions-control equipment is estimated at more than $350 million.

The first new system to further reduce nitrogen oxide emissions from Unit 1 at John Sevier is expected to be in operation this summer during the ozone season. The other three units are scheduled to have similar equipment installed by 2010.
