Siemens and ABB offices raided

14 February 2007 - Siemens and several of its engineering rivals had its offices raided by the European Commission on Tuesday in connection with a cartel probe.

The Commission refused to identify the companies targeted in the raids but Siemens and ABB confirmed that their offices had been searched.

Brussels said the groups were suspected of forming a price-fixing cartel in the market for transformers, key components in the power grid in controlling voltage. Siemens said in a statement that the Brussels antitrust watchdog was investigating five companies, and added: "The EU Commission is investigating collusion in the area of power transformers in Germany, Austria and the Netherlands between 1999 and 2003."

The Commission refused to confirm the extent of its probe.
