12 February 2007 - Belarus plans to bring two nuclear power plant units into operation by 2016, according to energy minister Alexander Ozerets.
"We will bring power unit 1 into operation in 2014 and power unit 2 in 2016," Ozerets said, adding that these dates are approximate and are about twelve months ahead of the original target.
When power unit 2 has reached its full capacity, Belarus is expected to reduce natural gas consumption by some 5bn m3, crucial for the former Soviet state as the price for natural gas for Belarus will be close to that paid by Europe, said Ozerets.
Belarus plans to reduce its annual natural gas consumption by 600-900m m3 by revising its internal fuel and energy balance toward increasing the share of locally-produced fuel, Ozerets said.
Belarus also plans to enlarge the volume of underground gas storage facilities to 2-3bn m3, which would be enough to accumulate strategic gas supplies for three months, he said.
