7 February 2007 -- Salt River Project, a 20 percent owner of the Mohave Generating Station in Laughlin, Nevada, US, is ending efforts to return the plant to service, citing timeline delays that would render the facility economically unfeasible.
The 1,580-MW coal-fired plant has been shut down since December 2005, due to an agreement between plant owners and environmental groups. In June 2006, Southern California Edison (SCE) and two other co-owners, Nevada Power Co. and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP), announced they would no longer pursue a restart of the plant. In September 2006, SRP announced its plans to seek a new ownership group to extend the life of Mohave.
SRP said it had formed a new ownership group that was prepared to complete a number of steps to bring the plant back online, but did not disclose the names of the proposed owners. The planned steps included the construction of approximately $750 million in additional pollution-control systems and new water supply systems.
SRP believes SCE, the majority owner of the plant, intends to continue with its ongoing effort to identify potential new buyers for Mohave.
