Brookfield Power completes $3 mln in updates at New York hydropower plant

6 February 2007 -- Brookfield Power recently completed a $3 million enhancement project at its 4-MW Allens Falls hydroelectric generating plant on the St. Regis River in Parishville, New York. The six-month upgrade project was completed in late 2006 and met requirements under Brookfield Power's Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) operating license.

The project included the installation of a surge tank to replace a tank that had been in service since the 1920s. The surge tank acts similar to a relief valve whereby it absorbs the kinetic energy of the water should the turbine shut off, allowing the excess water to flow up the tank. The new surge tank adheres to requirements set by the FERC to withstand a seismic event.

Also removed was 1,500 feet of pipe that carried water from the St. Regis River to the Allens Falls hydropower plant. It was replaced with new foundations, ring girders and 1,500 feet of new, 7-foot-diameter steel pipe.
