5 February 2007 - RWE npower has disclosed plans for an £800m ($1.57bn) investment in a combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plant to be built in the UK using Alstom as the contractor.
The company has identified two potential sites for the new CCGT plant; Staythorpe, near Newark in Nottinghamshire, and Pembroke in West Wales, the site of now demolished coal and oil-fired power stations. If the former, it would be the biggest gas-fired station in the UK, with 2 GW of generating capacity, and if the latter it would be the second biggest, producing 1.5 GW of electricity.
A decision will be made on the site later this year, with generation commencing in 2009. A 2 GW plant would provide power for 3m-4m households.
RWE npower has also given the green light to a further £100m investment in new wind farm developments including Little Cheyne Court in Kent and Knabs Ridge in Yorkshire.
These major investments will increase the UK's generation capacity by up to 2 100 MW - enough power for three to four million households. RWE npower's generating capacity will increase by 23 per cent.
