China's electricity output exceeded consumption by 10 bn kwh in 2006

29 January 2007 - China's electricity output rose by 13 per cent to reach 2.83 trillion kWh last year, exceeding consumption by 10 bn kWh, according to the State Electricity Regulatory Commission.

"The energy shortage ended in 2006, "said You Quan, chairman of the commission. China added 100 GW of new electricity capacity last year, bringing the total power capacity to 600 GW, said You.

China's GDP growth grew by 10.7 per cent in 2006. The government has been striving to convert the energy-intensive economy to a more sustainable model with a lower energy demand.
