January 19 2007 - The capacity of the Baltic nuclear power plant project being developed in collaboration with Poland is to be doubled from two 800 MW reactors to four of 800 MW.
Rymantas Juozaitis, head of the Lithuanian energy group Leituvos Energija, said the project's costs had so far been estimated at between €2.5bn ($3.3bn) and €4bn but these would now rise significantly. The nuclear complex will be constructed on the site of the existing RBMK Lithuanian nuclear plant of 2 x 1500 MW at Ignalina.
The closure of the existing Ignalina nuclear plant was made a condition of Lithuanian access to the European Union. The first set was disconnected from the grid in early 2005 and the second will be shut down by 2009. The new project is provisionally scheduled for operation from 2015 but the addition of two further reactors will affect this timetable.
The Baltic States are keen to reduce their dependence on Russia for energy and the Ignalina nuclear plant in Lithuania has not only met 80 per cent of consumption requirements inside the country but has allowed current to be exported to Poland and other east European states. ends
