January 18 2007 - The Italian electricity group Enel is planning to invest €1.5bn ($1.9bn) in Romania's energy sector, according to Bucharest's commerce ministry.
Romania occupies an important place in Enel's development strategies, and Enel will increase its investment in Romania's energy projects, said Enel managing director Fulvio Conti, who was accompanying Italian Premier Romano Prodi on a tour to Romania.
Officials from the Romanian Ministry of Economy and Commerce said that Romania must ensure continued investment in its energy field to reduce energy costs and improve the country's competitiveness.
The officials hoped that Enel would actively take part in the investment in and development of Romania's energy projects.
Italy is an important partner of Romania in the energy field.
The two countries signed a memorandum of understanding in March 2006 on the building of an oil pipeline from the Romanian port of Constanta to Italy's Trieste.
