17 January 2007 -- Reports are beginning to emerge on plans to terminate a 40-year partnership between Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. and Westinghouse Electric Co.
Kazuo Tsukuda, president of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, said his company would break off agreements over cooperative work in licensing technology with Westinghouse. A Bloomberg News report said the Japanese company president made these comments during a meeting in Tokyo on Monday.
MHI and Westinghouse previously allied to develop the AP 1000, a mid-size reactor with a two-loop configuration and advanced "passive" safety features that use gravity and a simpler design to enhance performance and reduce construction costs.
Mitsubishi had tried to acquire Westinghouse, but lost the bid to Toshiba Corp. In October, MHI and French nuclear power supplier Areva announced an agreement to collaborate in the area of nuclear energy in order to expand their presence in growing markets.
