17 January 2007 -- PacifiCorp's proposal to build two coal plants faced opposition Tuesday when the Oregon Public Utility Commission (PUC) rejected the utility's plans for how to meet growing demand in the area.

The Associated Press reported that PUC officials did not find the proposal consistent with a plan approved previously to focus on meeting demand through renewable resources, conservation and short-term power purchase agreements.

PUC officials said they expected to see a different strategy from PacifiCorp, which operates as Pacific Power in Oregon, that would avoid building a new baseload plant.

Pacific Power serves approximately 694,000 customers in Oregon, Washington and California. Its sister company Rocky Mountain Power serves customers in Utah, Wyoming and Idaho.
