11 January 2007 -- Pacific Gas and Electric Co. (PG&E) this week came a step closer to providing 20 percent production from renewable sources.
The northern California utility began receiving renewable power from the Buena Vista Energy, LLC Wind Project located in the Altamont pass area of Contra Costa County. Buena Vista will provide over 38 MW of wind power to California's electricity customers.
The utility currently supplies more than 13 percent of its energy from renewable resources that qualify under California's RPS Program. The utility boasts that more than 50 percent of the electricity that PG&E delivers to its customers comes from generating resources that emit no carbon dioxide, the primary contributor to global warming. PG&E owns Diablo Canyon, one of only two nuclear generating stations in California. The plant provides 20 percent of PG&E customers' needs.
The RPS Program was passed by the state legislature and managed by California's Public Utilities Commission and Energy Commission. The program requires each investor-owned utility to increase its procurement of eligible renewable generating resources by 1 percent of load per year to achieve a 20 percent renewable energy goal.
