January 5 2007 - Centrica, formerly known as British Gas, is lining up a bid for €1.5bn ($1.98bn) bid or assets to be auctioned by Dutch energy firms Nuon and Essen following their imminent merger.
The UK company is seeking to build its presence in the Netherlands, where it owns a low-cost energy provider Oxxio. Centrica has already compiled a wish list, including many of the assets regulators may force the merged company to sell.
Nuon and Essent are set to announce the terms of their €15bn merger within days. Nuon confirmed the merger talks with Essent last June, but the negotiations have been slow, complicated by both companies' complex municipal shareholding bases and regulatory uncertainty.
Centrica had sought a direct deal with Nuon last year but a change in government in the Netherlands made foreign takeovers of Dutch utilities less easy.
