January 3 2007 - German power giant RWE has sold its 18.1 per cent stake in MTU CFC Solutions GmbH for an undisclosed sum to Tognum GmbH, making the latter the sole owner of the fuel cells manufacturer.
MTU CFC Solutions, originally a joint venture between RWE and Tognum, is the world's first producer of fuel cells to use biogas to generate CO2-neutral energy with carbonate fuel cells in small power plants. The company has installed more than 40 plants worldwide and recently delivered the world's first large-scale biogas fuel cell plant at Leonburg near Stuttgart, which has a capacity of 1.4 mn kWh of CO2-neutral electricity.
Volker Heuer, CEO of Tognum, said: "As stationary fuel cells approach the production stage, the emphasis will be shifted to worldwide marketing." RWE said that, in line with a top-level strategic decision to concentrate as an operator and not a producer of power plants, the sale of the shares was a logical step.
RWE added that it would remain an active user of fuel cells, and would continue to test and evaluate them in order to further development of fuel cell technology.
