Spanish power investment swells

Power plant investment from Spain's five integrated electricity groups soared by more than a quarter in 2006, according to industry association Unesa.

The association, comprising of the five Spanish power groups - Endesa, Iberdrola, Union Fenosa, HC Energia and Enel Viesgo, said that investment in electricity generation plants rose by some 27.7 per cent year-on-year to €3.2 bn ($4.2bn). Total investment in Spain's electricity industry by the five companies rose to €5.2 bn, an increase of 7.8 per cent on 2005.

Total installed electricity generating capacity in Spain as a whole rose to 63 366 MW by the end of 2006. Unesa members added 1 288 MW in 2006.

Unesa stated that gross power production in Spain rose 2.5 per cent last year to 302 028 GWh and new power production by 2.8 per cent to 289 701 GWh. Natural gas units accounted for 30 per cent of output, coal fired generators 23 per cent, nuclear power plants 20 per cent, hydroelectric installations 10 per cent, renewables 10 per cent and oil fired stations 7 per cent.
