Voith Siemens Hydro wins award for Rheinfelden hydro plant
27 December 2006 -- Energiedienst AG (ED), a company of German EnBW, has awarded the contract for supplying turbines and generators for the new Rheinfelden hydro power plant to a consortium led by Voith Siemens Hydro Power Generation. Partner within the consortium is Alstom Hydro (Switzerland) AG.
The scope of supply includes four Kaplan bulb turbines with a capacity of 25 MW each, and the related generators, together with a smaller mandatory release unit and a number of supplementary systems. The new complex to be built for Rheinfelden, with a volume of 380 million euros, is the largest investment in renewable energies in Germany these days.
The start of operation through the new units is scheduled for 2010. With a total of 100 MW of installed capacity, the performance of the newly-built plant will be four times as high as the current plant capacity. Average annual production will be raised from 185 million kWh to 600 million kWh.
The Rheinfelden hydro power plant is located on the Rhine River that marks the border between Switzerland and Germany. The plant was the first big hydroelectric power plant in Europe's history of energy generation.
Commissioned in 1898, the electricity generated by this plant significantly contributed to industrialization and build-up of economical infrastructure as well as standard of living in the entire region.
Since 1928, Voith Siemens Hydro has regularly undertaken service and maintenance tasks in Rheinfelden.
