Leak closes Japanese nuke plant

11 December 2006 -- A Japanese electric power company said it will shut down a nuclear power plant in northern Japan after it leaked a small amount of coolant water containing radioactive material.

A spokesman of Tohoku Electric Power Co, said the No. 2 reactor at the Onagawa nuclear power plant will be shut down because of the leakage of coolant water from a pipe valve. No radiation was released outside the compound and no one was injured. The cause of the leak was being investigated.

The reactor has a generating capacity of 825 MW. The Onagawa nuclear plant in Oshika in Miyagi prefecture (state) is about 300 km northeast of Tokyo. Japan relies on nuclear plants for a third of its energy needs and aims to raise that to nearly 40 percent by 2010.
