E.ON holds groundbreaking at UK's Cambridgeshire wind farm

29 November 2006 -- E.ON UK has held a ground breaking ceremony at its Stag's Holt wind farm near March.

The start of work at the project, which will eventually see nine turbines built at the site, was marked by the planting on nine trees on the site, which is south west of Coldham.

E.ON aims to cut carbon intensity by 10 percent by 2012, having already cut it by 20 percent since 1990.

In addition, it plans to spend 1 billion pounds on renewables in the next five years, which includes both Stag's Holt and the ongoing work to build the UK's most powerful dedicated biomass power station at Steven's Croft near Lockerbie.

Once complete, Stag's Holt will consist of nine 2 MW Vestas wind turbines, able to supply enough electricity to power around 33,500 homes.

The turbines also form part of a4 billion investment plan in the UK that includes:

  • New gas-fired power stations at the Isle of Grain in Kent (which was given government permission in October) and at Drakelow in Derbyshire
  • New £1bn coal-fired units at Kingsnorth power station in Kent
  • A feasibility study into a world-leading clean coal power station at Killingholme in Lincolnshire
  • 1.2 billion pounds of improvements to the electricity distribution network in central England
  • Building the UK's largest dedicated biomass power station at Steven's Croft in Lockerbie
  • The continuing development of around 1,300MW of wind farms, both on- and offshore

Formal planning permission for the scheme was granted by Fenland District Council in September 2005.
