Wheelabrator to supply FGD systems for Reliant's Keystone station

14 November 2006 -- Wheelabrator Air Pollution Control Inc., a division of Siemens Power Generation, will design, supply and install two wet flue gas desulfurization (FGD) systems for Reliant Energy, Inc. at the Keystone Generating Station near Indiana, Pennsylvania, US. Reliant jointly owns the Keystone station with six other power companies and operates the facility on behalf of the owners.

The Keystone station consists of two coal-fired, steam-electric generation boilers. Unit 1 started commercial operation in 1967, and Unit 2 went online a year later. Installation of the new emission control systems is part of the Keystone owners' strategy for maximizing the long-term value of its power generation assets.

The environmental upgrade will utilize Wheelabrator's wet FGD technology to control emissions from both 850-MW boilers. The systems are expected to begin commercial operation in 2009 and will remove 98 percent of sulfur dioxide from the station's flue gas and reduce the emission of mercury.
