Fire causes standstill at Sweden's Ringhals 3 nuclear unit

14 November 2006 -- Vattenfall announced that the Ringhals 3 reactor will remain shut down for at least two weeks after the fire in a transformer early Tuesday morning caused a reactor trip.

The fire started shortly after midnight and was extinguished around 2 a.m. Due to the electrical faults caused by the fire a reactor trip followed. All the safety systems operated as expected and the fire did not affect the reactor systems.

"Our routines and our contacts with the SKI worked as they should, and safety was never at risk," comments Göran Lundgren, head of Vattenfall Nordic Electricity Generation.

It will take at least two weeks to restore the transformer, which belongs to one of the two turbines. Safety regulations require that there are at least two feedings of electricity to the reactor.

The transformer is located outside the turbine building and provides electricity to the unit. It is placed in a concrete construction without a roof, which made it easy for the fire brigade to reach the fire from one of their vehicles.

Ringhals' own fire brigade was on site within minutes and soon also received backup from fire brigades nearby.

A thorough analysis of the reasons for the fire will be carried out.
