Progress Energy requests nuclear permit

14 November 2006 -- Electric utility company Progress Energy on Tuesday said it has requested that federal regulators renew its license to operate its Harris nuclear plant for another 20 years.

The plant generates electricity for 1.4 million customers in North and South Carolina.

Progress Energy said it has submitted its license-extension application to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The renewal process includes a review of the plant's equipment, maintenance and environmental impacts -- a process expected to take 22 to 30 months.

The agency granted a 40-year operating license to the company in 1986.
