India eyes 16% of power from wind

8 November 2006 -- As much as 16 percent of India's electricity needs could be supplied by wind power within the next 25 years, the country's president told renewable energy experts.

At present, India produces 6,053 MW of wind power, part of the estimated 130,000 MW of electricity it needs. Its installed wind capacity grew by 47 percent in the last fiscal year, according to reports quoting the Indian Wind Energy Association.

President Abdul Kalam said wind energy's present potential is around 45,000 MW. By 2030, India estimates it will need 400,000 MW of electric power.

The Asian region accounted for 19 percent of new wind turbine installations in 2005, experiencing a growth of over 46 percent. India ranks as the fourth largest user of wind power in the world, after Germany, Spain and the United States.
