1 November 2006 -- Bulgaria has selected the Russian firm Atmostryexport to build a multi-billion-dollar nuclear power plant at Belene on the Danube, the national power company announced Tuesday.
Atomstroyexport's 3.9-billion-euro tender for the project beat a bid from Czech giants Skoda by 1 billion euros. The two 1,000 MW light-water reactors would join existing installations of the same output capacity upstream on the Danube, at Kosloduy.
The Kosloduy plant is preparing to shutdown two Soviet-era, 440 MW reactors before Bulgaria joins the European Union on January 1, 2007.
