1 November 2006 -- SaskPower, Babcock & Wilcox Canada (B&W) and Air Liquide have come to an agreement to jointly develop CO2 separation technology as the core process for SaskPower's proposed clean coal project for Saskatchewan, Canada.
The technology, called Oxyfuel, nearly eliminates emissions of combustion by-products, including greenhouse gas emissions. B&W Canada will provide the design and engineering required to develop a supercritical pressure pulverized coal-fired boiler. B&W Canada's work will help SaskPower assess whether to proceed to the construction phase on the near-zero emissions power station. A site has not yet been announced for the project.
SaskPower is currently examining the feasibility of designing and implementing a 300-MW clean coal plant that would capture about 8,000 tonnes of CO2 a day. SaskPower said the unit would help create a balance between emerging regulatory requirements and the need for baseload generating capacity using the region's 300-year supply of low-cost lignite coal.
A decision on whether to proceed with the project will be announced in mid-2007 with the plant going online in 2011.
