1,000 MW gas project planned for South Africa

27 October 2006 -- South African State-owned enterprise Eskom is reported to be close to authorizing a gas turbine energy project that will provide an additional 1,000 MW to the Western Cape region by the winter of 2008.

The Gas One project would be developed in addition to an R3,5-billion open-cycle gas-turbine (OCGT) project currently under construction in the Western Cape. Electricity demand is forecast to grow by about 4 percent, pinching reserve margins. The proposed project is an open-cycle gas-turbine plant fueled by liquid fuel, with the option of converting it to a combined-cycle gas-turbine plant in the future.
