25 October 2006 -- An international Siemens-led consortium has been awarded a major contract from Thailand for the turnkey building of a combined cycle power plant with a capacity of 700 MW. The customer is the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT). Construction of the plant is scheduled to be completed in March 2009.
The new combined cycle power plant, Bang Pakong CCPP 5, to be constructed by a consortium with Marubeni Corp., Japan, headed by Siemens PG, will be incorporated in EGAT's Bang Pakong power plant, located about 60 kilometers Southeast of Bangkog in the Chachoengsao province. As general contractor, Siemens will provide two high-efficiency SGT5-4000F gas turbines, one steam turbine along with the associated electrical system and the instrumentation & control system SPPA-T3000. Marubeni will supply two heat recovery steam generators, the balance of plant, civil works and installation services. Primary fuel of the new unit will be natural gas, with oil as secondary fuel.
Presently installed power generating capacity in Thailand is approximately 31,000 MW and demand for electricity is growing by up to seven percent annually as major industries in the fields of metalworking, textile, paper and rubber need more power for their production facilities. The government in Thailand therefore plans to increase the installed capacity to around 44,000 MW by the year 2015.
