18 October 2006 -- Alstom has signed a contract worth over 900 million euros to build a 833 MW turnkey clean coal power plant in Belchatow, Poland, for Polish utility BOT Elektrownia Belchatow SA. The new plant will be the largest power plant ever built in the country. It is scheduled to begin commercial operation in October 2010.
As a plant integrator, Alstom will design, build and commission the new lignite-fired power plant, which will achieve efficiencies of up to 42 percent. Alstom said this would make it the most efficient lignite-fired coal plant in the country and one of the most advanced lignite-fired plants in the world.
Alstom will manufacture and supply all the main equipment, including the advanced supercritical boiler, the STF100 steam turbine, the GIGATOP turbo generator and the ALSPA P320 control system.
The low-NOx boiler will be integrated with a wet flue gas desulphurization system so that emissions of sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides will be reduced to meet emission levels required by the EU's Large Combustion Plant Directive.
The plant is designed to operate with a high efficiency cycle. The effect will not only be reduced fuel consumption but also a decrease in overall emissions, including CO2. The plant will generate around 10 percent less CO2 on a per KWh basis than a typical coal plant in the region.
