SUEZ Energy secures contracts for 148 MW Brazilian power

16 October 2006 -- SUEZ Energy International sold 148 MW from a hydroelectric power plant project at the power auctions in Brazil, organized October 10. The price obtained in the auction was 135.01 BRL per MWh (€50/MWh) for São Salvador project.

The São Salvador concession was acquired by SUEZ Energy International in 2001 and is located on the Tocantins river, between the states of Tocantins and Goiás in Brazil. The 241 MW plant will be situated 80kms downstream from the Cana Brava power plant, which is owned by Tractebel Energia, SUEZ's subsidiary in Brazil.

Mauricio Bähr comments: "We want to start the construction as soon as possible, in order to fulfill the obligations of the energy sales agreement with the energy distributors' pool beginning in 2011. If the commercial operation starts before 2011, the company will sell this electricity to Tractebel Energia's customers and to the free market."

Dirk Beeuwsaert, CEO of SUEZ Energy International: "The auctions organized in Brazil aim at coping with the growing demand for electricity in the country. SUEZ's successful participation and its decision to start constructing this new hydro plant is a demonstration that Brazil is an interesting market for SUEZ. Via these auctions SUEZ was able to secure long term contracts which are essential for the optimization and risk management of Tractebel Energia's client's portfolio."
