11 October 2006 -- The Electric Power Research Institute's (EPRI) coal gasification expert Dr. Neville Holt, who championed electricity research in gasification of coal and production, received a Lifetime Achievement Award recently from the Gasification Technologies Council.
Holt was honored for leading EPRI's gasification programs and developing innovative technology concepts that are now being widely used by electric utilities. He is regularly called on by industry leaders to provide guidance on gasification projects. Holt has contributed seminal papers directly influencing gasification design, and is the author of a chapter on gasification in the Encyclopedia of Physical Science and Technology.
Gasification converts carbon-containing materials such as coal, petroleum residues and biomass to clean synthesis gas (syngas) for the production of chemicals, fuels, and electricity.
Holt has provided over 30 years of industry leadership in the coal gasification field while at EPRI; in the 1980s he was one of the principal leaders in the world's first coal gasification combined-cycle demonstration.
"I am deeply honored to be recognized by the GTC for this distinguished award," Holt said. "Syngas from the gasification of abundant low cost resources, particularly coal, can make a major contribution to meeting the supply needs and environmental goals of industry and in providing clean, safe electric power from strategically reliable domestic resources."
Industry leaders have cited Holt's input as vital to the design of gasification plants for DOE's $1 billion FutureGen project. Major electric utilities have relied on Holt's review and input in the design of gasification plants.
Holt has served as a leader in the creation of the Gasification Users Association (GUA), a major, international peer group that provides insight into best practices for design, operation and maintenance.
"Gasification technologies create an important and viable alternative to oil and natural gas for the production of power, fuels and chemicals," said Phil Amick, director of ConocoPhillips' gasification technology division and chairman of the Gasification Technologies Council. "Without the imagination, dedication and expertise of gasification champions such as Holt, this industry would not be where it is today; at a critical juncture where interest in clean energy solutions and investment in gasification technologies have created enormous momentum for this industry."
