Bangladesh power generation hits record low

9 October 2006 -- The country's power generation on October 7 hit a record low in seven years, leaving many consumers without power for much of the day in hot and humid weather. Generators produced 2,757 MW of power during the peak hour at 6 PM on Saturday.

"This was the lowest ever power generation in seven years, deepening the power crisis across the country," said an official. According to other officials, the country's power generation was about 2,700 MW in 1998 before the Haripur 360 MW came into operation. The power supply situation in the country took a turn for the worse when two major generation units suffered technical faults Saturday. The 210 MW unit-5 of Ghorashal Power Station was shut while technical faults in another unit of similar capacity reduced its generation to 100 MW.

The country has been suffering from severe power shortage for more than a month as 20 generation units remained out of operation for various reasons. Sources said despite the shortage, a main power producer supplied about 1,500 MW to avoid public outrage in Dhaka.
