9 October 2006 -- Consumers Energy reportedly expects to decide by early to mid-2007 where it will seek to build a new coal-fired electrical power plant that is expected to cost more than $1 billion.
The Karn-Weadock generating complex in Bay County is on a short list of a half-dozen sites being considered, said Bob Fennech, Consumers Energy's senior vice president of electric generation. The company would put controls on a new plant to cut levels of mercury, nitrogen oxide and sulfur dioxide.
The Karn-Weadock complex, which currently is made up of three plants on a 1,000-acre site, burns about 3 million tons of coal a year.
