4 October 2006 -- Princess Anne will officially open Britain's first purpose-built nuclear clean-up test, trials, training, research and development centre as part of a visit to Caithness on Tuesday, 10th October.
She will tour the £3.5 million facility at Janetstown, UK, near Thurso and meet staff, guests and PhD researchers working there.
The t3UK centre will support the UK's £70 billion nuclear clean-up program. It provides state-of-the-art facilities for companies to train staff and test the equipment needed to dismantle hazardous facilities at nuclear sites. It is also being marketed to the oil and gas and environmental sectors as an equipment-testing base.
Funded by Highlands and Islands Enterprise, with assistance from the European Regional Development Fund, the facility is leased and managed by t3UK Ltd, part of the JGC group, for use by local, national and international contractors. It features a large trials hall, laboratories and conference facilities.
The facility is also home to the UHI Decommissioning and Environmental Remediation Centre (DERC), operated by North Highland College UHI, part of the UHI Millennium Institute network of colleges and research institutes throughout the Highlands and Islands. This project was supported with funding of £1 million from HIE, £1 million from ERDF and £200,000 from UHI.
