3 October 2006 -- Basin Electric Power Cooperative of Bismarck, N.D., is looking at three different locations in South Dakota and one in North Dakota to build a $1.5 billion coal-fired power plant. Basin Electric reportedly hopes to have a site selected within the next year. The plant would use Powder River Basin coal to generate 600 MW of electricity.

News reports said the Co-op is considering Stanton, N.D., where the company already has two coal-fired power plants. South Dakota sites include Pierre, Wolsey and Selby. Currently Selby is the only area where Basin has purchased land options to build the plant.

Basin Electric is considering using the Burlington Northern Santa-Fe Railroad, which also services the Big Stone plant, to supply coal for the Selby site and the Dakota, Minnesota, and Eastern railroad for the Pierre and Wolsey sites.
