27 September 2006 -- Mott MacDonald Pettit, a subsidiary of Mott MacDonald, has been awarded a five-year technical services contract by BELCO to provide engineering, management and specialist technical services for the expansion of Bermuda's generating facilities.
Mott MacDonald said work should commence in 2007 and will include planning for the replacement of ageing plant and work towards meeting the island's forecasted increase in demand for electricity up to 2025 and beyond.
The scope of Mott MacDonald Pettit's contract covers the following specific areas: - stationary diesel power generation gas turbine plant
- technical support in discussions with IPP developers
- distributed generation and CHP
- environmental regulations and control
- renewable power generation technology
- regulation, system planning
- transmission and distribution
Initially, the Mott MacDonald Pettit team will be involved with BELCO in assessing Bermuda's regulatory frameworks and proposing changes in line with anticipated environmental legislation as well as assessing the existing site layout at Pembroke to see how it can be expanded to meet the level of growth and retirement of plant predicted. Using these assessments, the team will also help to develop a plan that takes into consideration existing and new fuel, lube oil storage facilities, waste treatment plant and cooling facilities.
