27 September 2006 -- Lentjes GmbH, a subsidiary of the GEA Group Aktiengesellschaft, together with its UK-based affiliate Lentjes UK, has been awarded a new order worth 145 million euros covering the supply and services to build two flue gas desulphurization (FGD) plants at Rugeley power station.
The contract was awarded by Rugeley Power Limited, a subsidiary of the global power generation company International Power plc. Rugeley Power Station was commissioned in 1970 and is located in Staffordshire, on the River Trent 30 km north of Birmingham. It consists of two 500 MW coal-fired boilers. The plant mainly operates at baseload during the winter with periods of two-shift operation likely during other parts of the year.
The limestone/gypsum FGD systems incorporate a bypass system and a gas/gas heater for reheating the flue gases to over 80 C prior to being discharged through the chimney. The limestone delivery and gypsum off-take will be by rail and modifications to the existing coal delivery sidings are included in the supply, together with a tubular conveying system to transport the limestone/gypsum to and from the absorber area of the FGD plants.
A waste water treatment plant will clean the water from the gypsum dewatering process before discharge to a new outfall. The FGD systems are due to be commissioned in 2008.
The installation of the FGD plants will allow an extended operation of the power station complying with the European Large Combustion Plant Directive (LCPD).
Lentjes is currently constructing FGD plants for the Fiddler's Ferry and Ferrybridge power stations which are also located in the U.K. and, in part, are of similar design to Rugeley.
