Duke unit awards contract to Shaw Group, Alstom

27 September 2006 -- Duke Energy Carolinas has awarded a contract to The Shaw Group Inc. and its consortium partner Alstom Environmental Control to retrofit the coal-fired generating units at Duke's Allen Steam Station in Gaston County, North Carolina.

The project is part of an effort to reduce 95 percent of the sulfur dioxide emissions at the station, a 1,140-MW coal-fired power plant on Lake Wylie.

Under the agreement, Shaw will perform the majority of the project's engineering, procurement and construction. Alstom will design, engineer, manufacture and install scrubber equipment. The $425 million project is scheduled for completion in 2009.

Allen Steam Station is the third of four North Carolina power plants where Duke is installing sulfur dioxide scrubbers. The other plants are the Marshall Steam Station near Lake Norman, the Belews Creek plant in Stokes County and the Cliffside Steam Station in Rutherford and Cleveland counties.
