22 September 2006 -- ACCIONA has been selected to build and operate as owner a 62 MW photovoltaic solar plant near the town of Moura, in southern Portugal. The plant will be one of the largest in the world and cost more than 200 million euros. Its construction will be carried out in two stages: the first phase will produce 40-45 MW and will be online in 2008. The 17 to 22 MW will be completed by 2010.
The company will build a photovoltaic panel manufacturing plant in the municipality of Moura with a minimum annual production capacity of 24 MW. ACCIONA will acquire 100 percent of the shares of Amper Solar, the owner of the rights to the solar plant and from its current shareholders: Moura Town Council (88 percent), Comoiprel (2 percent) and the consultant Renatura Networks.Com (10 percent). The Town Council may retain, if it so wishes, up to 20 percent of the company's capital. ACCIONA Solar will be in charge of the turnkey construction of the plant.
In Canada, Acciona Wind Energy Canada Inc. celebrated the opening of their joint venture wind power project in Alberta with Enbridge Inc. and Suncor Energy Products Inc. The Chin Chute facility cost $60 million, will produce 30-MW and is located 20 kilometres southwest of Taber.
The facility consists of 20 1.5-MW turbines. Power generated from the facility is expected to be available to the grid in late October 2006. In the meantime, the companies will focus on commissioning each turbine and completing the 20-kilometer transmission line. Once in full service, Acciona will operate the wind farm.
