Power Engineering magazine and the Junior Engineering Technical Society (JETS) announce creation of the Next Generation Scholarship Fund.
Supported by contributions from companies across the spectrum of the electric power generation industry, the Fund will provide college scholarships to high school students who plan on pursuing careers in the power industry. Click here to download the contribution form.
The Fund will award its first scholarship, following a competitive application process, in time for the Fall 2007 school year. The official scholarship presentation award ceremony will be part of the Projects-of-the-Year Award gala banquet at each year's POWER-GEN International.
"The Next Generation Scholarship Fund is another way for the industry to proactively address the critically important issue of developing the next generation of power industry professional," said Richard Baker, vice president North American Power Generation Group for PennWell Publishing, which publishes Power Engineering. "We feel it's our responsibility to take a leadership role in helping the electric power industry address workforce issues."
JETS is a 501 (c) 3 organization, meaning all contributions to the fund will be tax deductible. Power Engineering magazine will promote the Next Generation Scholarship Fund to its 60,000 readers across North America. The scholarship will also be promoted at POWER-GEN International, COAL-GEN and Power-Gen Renewable Energy & Fuels.
"Making a contribution to the Fund is an excellent way for companies to demonstrate their commitment to addressing the workforce issue," said David Wagman, managing editor of Power Engineering. "It also is a cost-effective way for companies to gain recognition among young people and educators and the institutions that are teaching the next generation of power industry workforce."
Megan Balkovic, JETS Director of Development, said corporate contributions to the Next Generation Scholarship Fund may be made at three levels: $5,000 Innovator Level; $2,500 Facilitator Level; and $1,000 Baseload Level. Details on giving and the perks that go with each level of support may be found at the JETS Web site at www.JETS.org or at the Power Engineering magazine Web site.
