BKW expands activity in Italy

20 September 2006 -- BKW FMB Energie AG is strengthening its presence in the Italian market with a 25 percent holding in the 800 MW gas-fired co-generation power plant of the German energy company E.ON Energie AG. The plant is currently under construction in Livorno Ferraris, northern Italy.

The company is also stepping up market operations in Switzerland, and together with the Papierfabrik Utzenstorf has begun drawing up detailed plans for a gas-fired co-generation plant in Utzenstorf to be managed by the project company Energie Utzenstorf AG.

The plant is scheduled to go live in the spring of 2008 and will produce sufficient electricity to supply around one million households.

BKW's activities on the Italian market will be combined and coordinated under the umbrella of BKW Italia S.p.A., changing their former company Electra Italia S.p.A. BKW is also engaging in energy production through its acquisition of eight hydroelectric plants and two gas-fired plant projects, coupled with its stake in STC S.p.A.
