Nigeria aspires to be top LNG supplier

20 September 2006 -- Nigeria's president has stated his ambition to make Nigeria the world's leading supplier of liquefied natural gas (LNG) within the next five years.

President Olusegun Obasanjo, during a meeting with Titi Mitu, president of Chubu Electric Power Company in Japan, said that Nigeria would become the top supplier of LNG.

Mitu, quoted in Japanese media, supported Obasanjo's claims saying that Nigeria would soon show the world that it was more of a gas nation than an oil nation. He said expansions at Brass, Bonny and Oke gas fields would make Nigeria the world's largest LNG supplier.

Chubu is the world's largest user of LNG and Mitu has encouraged the company to invest in Nigeria and, in particular, the West Africa country's power sector.
