Alberta clean coal project advances

14 September 2006 -- Epcor and the provincial government in Alberta Canada are contributing C$11 million each to help complete an engineering study for a proposed clean coal power project. The Canadian federal government is also expected to contribute $11 million. The pilot plant is slated to be built in Alberta and would be he first in the country.

The Alberta Energy Research Institute has spent about $13 million over the past five years on clean coal technology. Premier Ralph Klein has voiced strong support for the idea.

David Lewin, Epcor's senior vice-president of environment, said the engineering study can move ahead while the federal funding is approved. The recent change in Canada's federal government delayed funding.
