Coal blast at Midwest Generation station

14 September 2006 -- Three men were critically injured and two others suffered minor injuries in an explosion at Midwest Generation's Will County Station power plant in Romeoville, Illinois, US, on September 12.

Midwest Generation officials said the explosion occurred in a mill that pulverizes coal and blows it into one of the plant's four furnaces. At the time, one of the units was tripped offline, plant manager Dave Strom was quoted as saying. There was hot coal inside the mill which spontaneously combusted. The impact from the explosion knocked the employees back.

The first explosion caused a second explosion in an adjacent mill. Damage to the plant was reported as being minor. The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration was notified of the accident, said a company spokeswoman.

Midwest Generation operates six power stations in Illinois and one in Pennsylvania.
