Arizona governor mandates GHG reductions

11 September 2006 -- Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano issued an executive order on Friday that outlines major steps to be taken in reducing the states' greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

The governor's plan calls for a reduction of Arizona's GHG emissions to be at its 2000 level within 14 years and 50 percent below this 2000 level by 2040. The governor also established the Arizona Climate Change Advisory Group, under the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality, and charged it with the responsibility of researching ways for the state to achieve these emission goals.

The executive order focuses mainly on transportation, even requiring all state-owned vehicles purchased after 2007 to be hybrids or use alternative fuels. The governor plans to work with other Western states in curbing emissions that cause global warming. Since 1990, GHG emissions in Arizona have increased by 56 percent.
