24 August 2006 - The foundation stone for two units of RWE Power's lignite-fired power station with optimized plant technology (BoA 2 and 3) was laid at Neurath near Grevenbroich Wednesday.
German Federal Chancellor Dr Angela Merkel and North Rhine-Westphalia's Premier Dr Jürgen Rüttgers were received at Neurath by RWE CEO Harry Roels, RWE Power CEO Jan Zilius and Central Works Council Chairman Günter Reppien.
At the ceremony, Roels told the 200 guests, who included personalities from politics, industry and society, that RWE's Neurath power plant was leading the way in the technological development of power generation processes. "Here at Neurath, we'll be using the best technology in the world to generate electricity from lignite."
The new units will cost €2.2bn ($2.8bn) and will be completed in 2010.
Roels said that the BoA technology increases the efficiency of lignite-based power generation by more than 30 per cent compared with older systems and consequently reduces CO2 emissions per Kwh of electricity generated. He said that increasing energy efficiency is an important element in RWE's climate-protection strategy. BoA 2 and 3 will also contribute significantly toward a reliable and secure electricity supply that is independent of foreign sources.
The new power plant will provide some 2000 jobs and apprenticeships in the opencast mines, administration and at the location itself. Construction of both units will provide job opportunities for 4000 people from the surrounding region and create additional new work opportunities for suppliers. Roels: "With this project - one of Germany's largest investment schemes - RWE is providing a substantial boost to the economy and the labour market."
