Alstom wins air pollution control contract from East Kentucky

22 August 2006 - Alstom has been awarded a contract by East Kentucky Power Cooperative to supply emissions control systems for its H.L. Spurlock Power Station, Unit 2, located near Maysville, Kentucky USA. The order is valued at around €100m ($129m).

The project covers the supply of a wet flue gas desulphurization (WFGD) plant and associated equipment, in addition to a wet electrostatic precipitator (WESP). Alstom will also be responsible for erection and balance of plant engineering. The systems will reduce sulphur dioxide and particulate emissions from the Alstom-supplied 525 MW subcritical pulverized coal boiler.

This project is part of East Kentucky Power's long-term environmental compliance efforts, which include Alstom-designed Selective Catalytic Reduction equipment and Flash Dryer Absorber equipment.

Alstom's WFGD technology removes the sulphur dioxide produced during the combustion of coal in power plants. The system uses ground limestone reagent to react with the sulphur dioxide in the flue gas to produce a gypsum byproduct that can then be commercialised or safely landfilled.

The plant is scheduled to commence commercial operation in 2008.
