Entergy Nuclear selects Burns and Roe for new nuclear plant development
11 August 2006 -- Entergy Nuclear has selected Burns and Roe Enterprises, Inc., an international engineering consulting firm, as its owner's engineer to assist with technical and project management functions needed to enable the company to make future decisions regarding new nuclear plant development.
"We need specialized engineering assistance for a major project like a new nuclear plant, and Burns and Roe is an ideal choice to provide that help," said Randy Hutchinson, senior vice president of Entergy Nuclear business development.
He said the specialized support work will include broad-based engineering, equipment selection, procurement, vendor oversight, construction, risk management and project management expertise. Burns and Roe will supplement a special Entergy Nuclear team, which is evaluating the value and benefit of nuclear plant development to the Entergy System's customers.
Entergy is on track to receive the first early site permit in the nation from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in the first quarter of 2007, qualifying the Grand Gulf Nuclear Station near Port Gibson, Miss., as an acceptable site for a new nuclear unit.
In addition, NuStart Energy Development LLC, a consortium of 12 nuclear companies, has selected Grand Gulf as one of two plant sites it will use to prepare applications for some of the first construction and operating licenses from the NRC for a new nuclear energy plant in 30 years. NuStart plans to submit its COL application in 2007 and projects receiving a COL by 2010 as a test of the NRC's new licensing process for new plants. Entergy could then assume the COL from NuStart if a decision to build is made.
Separately, Entergy Nuclear also is preparing a combined construction and operating license application, scheduled to be filed in 2008, for a possible new nuclear unit to be built adjacent to Entergy Gulf States' River Bend Station near St. Francisville, La.
