CHP plant in UK to expand

2 August 2006 - Permission has been granted for the ConocoPhillips combined heat and power station plant at Immingham North Lincolnshire in the UK to increase capacity.

Consent has been granted to increase the capacity of the gas fired combined heat and power station from 760 MW to 1230MW. Planning permission has also been deemed to be granted subject to the inclusion of 14 conditions agreed with North Lincolnshire Council.

Granting the consent, UK Energy Minister Malcolm Wicks said:
"Combined heat and power plants like the one being extended at Immingham are designed to produce both electricity and usable heat.
They bring environmental benefits due to their very high levels of efficiency.

"This decision demonstrates the Government's commitment to granting consent to high quality combined heat and power and to reducing emissions of damaging carbon emissions."

The plant is currently designed to operate in several different modes, exporting anything from 150 MWthe e to its maximum of 734 MWe to the grid, while maintaining steam supply to the two refineries it serves.
